I’m the second of four children, and the only one of those kids to be cool enough to stare at paper for a living. I grew up in Montana, love nachos more than most things, and I spend a great deal of my hours drawing. Prior to becoming a freelance professional artist, I worked for the Forest Service, several construction gigs, the Montana Army National Guard, and spent four years in international medical manufacturing compliance. I left my office job in late 2018 to pursue full-time illustration, and that has proven to be a blessing for both my artistic development and mental health.
I think of art as visual communication, though what I’m saying, and what the viewer is gathering, can be very different. I approach a lot of my work through symbolic representations and distinct contrasts, often reducing colors to black and white. While much of my art has more than one meaning, that isn’t always the case- I once drew a bison out of sheer stubbornness, because I was working on shading techniques for hair, and was determined to make something hairy that didn’t look like I’d forgotten how pens work.
While I’ve been drawing in some form or another for the majority of my life, my style and material preferences have slowly been shifting towards mastering ink. I make drawing tutorials freely available on Instagram, and teach art when I’m not eyes-deep in projects. I hope you enjoy my work, but even if it’s not for you, I hope you find some beauty that is.
